Minutes from meeting: July 9, 2026

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. A motion was made by Amy Kuhnel and seconded by Bruce Lane to not read the Minutes of the last meeting. There were no new guests at the meeting. The July 4h picnic was well attended with 20 members and guests celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States of America.
Friday, July 10th, there will be a gathering to remember South Winds’ member Brian McBrayer who passed away in December 2025. Those who want to attend are to meet at the docks of Harbor Town and depart at 7:00 p.m. to head to “Brian’s Cove” where he spent many nights aboard his Catalina 22. The cove is located on the north shore of the lake slightly northeast of Galts Ferry day use area. Some boats plan on staying the night. Those who want to come out and then return to the marina can get transportation there and back.
Officers for 2027 – Please be thinking about who would like to serve as an officer in the Club. Elections are in September. All the above positions will be open.

Steve mentioned that the “Sunset Cruises” are back on Thursdays. Those who want to take a mental health evening after work is invited to enjoy lake sunsets. Some leave at 5:00 p.m. to sail and others later. No set time.
There is a raft up on July 18, 2026. Steve mentioned: there are two “full moon” raft ups on the calendar that would be good for an overnight stay on the lake: August 29th and September 26th.
The final picnic in 2026 is Saturday, September 5th at 5:00 p.m. Possibly a low country boil.
Fleet Captain Bruce Lane
There were three boats participating in Summer Race #3 - Mike McKay, Tim Wisner and Tonya Burke. Tonya won race #1 and Tim Wisner won race #2 and #3. It was a fun racing day.
Summer Race #4 is Saturday, July 11th. The Half Yard race is scheduled for August 8, 2026.

Knot Talk:
The talk was about anchors and anchoring. There is the Bruce anchor aka claw anchor. A one piece claw/bruce anchor known for setting quickly and performing reliably across mixed sea beds like sand, mud and gravel. Danforth anchor aka fluke anchor. Lightweight, high efficiency marine anchor. Features a hinged shank and two wide, flat, triangular flukes. Performs well in sand, mud and silt. Less effective in rock, heavy clay or thick grassy bottoms. Box anchor is a high performance, collapsible boat anchor known for its incredible holding power. Its square shape digs in mud, sand and rock, holding your boat securely at a 45 degree angle using half the rope length of traditional anchors. Anchor Rode – A common expert guideline is to add 6 to 15 feet of chain to anchor line. Estimate ½ boat length in chain or whole boat length. Ed Combs mentioned setting up anchor so you can retrieve your anchor if it gets stuck in rocks or weeds. There is a YouTube video entitled “How to rig an anchor and never lose it.” Another site on YouTube is DIY Anchor Release. How to setup an anchor release and no more lost anchors.
